SUMMARY:Perseid Meteor Shower Late Night Star Party (SEE UPDATE!)
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: Because of conflicting weather forecasts\, our hours for this evening’s event (Saturday\, August 12) have CHANGED from 7 to 2:00am to 9PM to 11PM only. PLEASE check out the sky conditions before making the drive out to Branched Oak Observatory.\nPerseid Meteor Shower LATE NIGHT Star Party \n\nThe Perseid Meteor Shower is going to be a great one this year thanks to a moonless night and a weekend timeframe.\n\n\n\nFor this event\, we will combine our regular Summer Hours activities starting before the sun goes down\, with an extension into the early morning hours when the odds for shooting stars will be greatest. Visit anytime between 7PM and 2AM and stay as long as you would like.\n\n\nBetween 7 and 9PM\, families can enjoy activities in the classroom\, and tours of our grounds. Observing will begin around 9PM\, with visitors having the opportunity to see galaxies\, nebulae\, and star-clusters through our different telescopes. As the evening progresses\, the radiant (apparent origin) of the shower will rise higher in the northeast increasing the probability of additional and brighter meteors.\n\n\n\n– The event will begin Saturday evening at 7pm\, and the sky-park will remain open until 2am Sunday morning.\n\n\n– Feel free to come anytime between 7pm and 2am (the later the better for observing). Lay back\, relax\, and stay as long as you would like.\n\n\n– Bring your own lawn chairs\, Zero-g chairs\, blankets\, pillows\, etc. Bring your own cooler\, refreshments and snacks.\n\n\n– Although the meteors will be the “(shooting) star of the show”\, we will have our various telescopes trained on dozens of beautiful objects throughout the evening\, including outstanding views of the Planet Saturn.\n\n\n– This event is weather dependent. If the skies are not cooperating\, observations may be difficult or impossible. PLEASE check our Facebook Page PRIOR to visiting for potential cancelations and general updates regarding the event.\n\n\n\nSee here for the location of Branched Oak Observatory.\nhttps://tinyurl.com/BOO-Location-Map\n\n\n\nHOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!\n\n\n\n\nBackground:\n\n\nThe Perseid Meteor Shower is caused when the Earth passes through the debris leftover by Comet Swift-Tuttle. These tiny remnants enter Earth’s atmosphere and produce a beautiful light show. The high point of the meteor shower is predicted between the 11th and the 14th of August and may yield as many as 90 meteors per hour. The “radiant” for the shower is in the constellation of Perseus found low in the northeast. Perseus is the Greek hero who flew in on the back of Pegasus and dispatched the Kraken sea monster using the head of Medusa and saving Andromeda the Princess.\n\n\nConfirmed BOO Volunteers and Summer Staff For the Evening:\nMichael Sibbernsen\, Brian Sivill\, Stephanny Velasquez\, Caelum Hubl\, Hailey Anderson\, Ana Eriksen\, Carol Wells. \nAdditional BOO Volunteers are encouraged to join if available. \nVolunteers: please check back here (as well as your messages) for event confirmation\, cancelation\, or postponement announcements.

SUMMARY:"Flash Star Party" - Northern Lights and More
DESCRIPTION:Category- General Public Event (Everyone invited) \n \nUPDATE: \n\nThe initial predictions from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center gave us a Kp 6 geomagnetic index (on a scale from 0-9) for Thursday’s storm.\n\n\nUnfortunately\, an updated three-day forecast has the Kp index just under 4\, which is not only insufficient to produce Northern Light activity in Nebraska but most likely not enough activity to even reach the United States at all.\n\n\nRight now\, Branched Oak Observatory is still planning to be OPEN tonight (Thursday\, July 13) for general observing. Keep watching here for updates regarding weather and sky visibility announcements.\n\n \n \nThere has been a great deal of BUZZ on the news and social media about potential Northern Lights being visible here in Nebraska- Thursday night\, July 13th. \n \nWith that in mind\, Branched Oak Observatory will have a last-minute “Flash Star Party” and open its doors Thursday evening. While our fingers are tightly crossed\, we just want to temper expectations… Aurora at these low of latitudes are rare\, and when visible\, fairly subtle. Regardless of if we experience any “Northern Lights”\, visitors will have a chance to see a bevy of other wonderful objects in the night sky (planets\, galaxies\, nebulae\, star clusters\, etc.) through our telescopes. \nWe hope to see you Thursday night (AND Fri\, Sat\, Sun during our regular Summer hours.) \nPLEASE check the weather AND/OR our Facebook Page BEFORE heading out for cancelation or other special announcements. \n \n\nNo Cost / No Registration For the Event\nOpen to Everyone\nArrive Anytime Between the Times Given\nStay for the Entire Event or As Long As You Want\nNo Park Permit Required\nNo Telescope Needed (You are\, however\, welcome to bring your own equipment)\n\n\nOur Location: Branched Oak Observatory is located near\, but not inside\, the Branched Oak Lake and Recreation Area. See here for a Google Map location of Branched Oak Observatory- https://tinyurl.com/BOO-Location-Map \nConfirmed BOO Volunteers For the Event:\nMichael Sibbernsen\, Kendra Sibbernsen\, Brain Sivill\, Matt Anderson\, Carol Wells\, Hailey Anderson \nAdditional BOO Volunteers are encouraged to join if available. \nVolunteers; please check back here (as well as your messages) for event confirmation\, cancelation\, or postponement announcements.

SUMMARY:Lyrid Meteor Shower Late Night Star Party
DESCRIPTION:Branched Oak Observatory AND Nebraska Science Festival Present: \nThe Lyrid Meteor Shower is going to be a GREAT ONE this year thanks to a near-moonless night and a weekend timeframe. \nFor this event\, we will combine our regular star party\, i.e. viewing planets\, galaxies\, nebulae\, and star-clusters with staying up LATE into the early morning hours when the meteor shower’s radiant is high\, and more/brighter shooting stars are likely. \nThe Lyrid Meteor Shower is caused when the Earth passes through the debris leftover by Comet Thatcher. The highpoint of the meteor shower is predicted between the 21st and 23rd of April\, and may yield as many as 10-15 meteors per hour. Although rare\, the Lyrids are known for surges that bring rates of up to 100 meteors per hour! \n\nThe event will begin Saturday evening at 10PM\, and the sky-park will remain open until 2AM Sunday morning.\nBring your own lawn chairs\, Zero-g chairs\, blankets\, pillows\, etc.\nBring your own cooler\, refreshments and snacks.\nFeel free to come anytime between 10pm and 2am. Lay back\, relax\, and stay as long as you would like.\nOur billboard light on at the corner of Raymond Rd. & 98th St. will go out and stay out around 11:30pm. Be sure you know our exact location / coordinates if you are joining us later in the morning hours.\nAlthough the meteors will be the big show for the evening\, we will have our telescopes trained on dozens of beautiful objects throughout the evening.\n\nHOPE TO SEE YOU THERE! \n\nNo Registration\nOpen to Everyone\nArrive Anytime Between the Times Given\nStay for the Entire Event or As Long As You Want\nNo Park Permit Required\nNo Telescope Needed – You are welcome to bring your own equipment!\n\nConfirmed BOO Volunteers For the Evening:\nMichael Sibbernsen (ESSMO)\, Doug (BRSC)\, Brett (BSO)\, Dave (Hosting and eVscope)\, Scott. Carol (Hosting\, parking\, and Binoculars). \nAdditional BOO Volunteers are encouraged to join if available. \nVolunteers: please check back here (as well as your messages) for event confirmation\, cancelation\, or postponement announcements.

SUMMARY:2nd Annual BOO "Messy" Messier Marathon
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: Our Star Party planned for Friday night / Saturday morning has been officially postponed to SATURDAY NIGHT. This will be less of a “marathon” and more of a “5K” (so to speak) unless the night remains clear in which some of our astronomers will stay into the morning hours. For now\, however\, we will plan on 9PM to Midnight on Saturday\, April 1st. (No Foolin’!). \nAll Night Messier Marathon. No Foolin! \nYes\, you may have seen M42- the Orion Nebula or M31- the Andromeda Galaxy\, and even a handful of other beautiful “Messier Objects\,” but what about the entire catalog of 110 deep-space wonders? We are going to give it a try\, and do so ALL in ONE evening! Are we crazy? Well\, we are astronomers\, so you be the judge. Join us on March 31st / April 1st for just a few hours or for the ENTIRE evening\, and you are guaranteed to see a bevy of galaxies\, nebulae\, and star clusters. \nThis event\, like all of our General Public events\, is FREE of charge and open to anyone interested in the night sky. Although not necessary\, you are welcome (and encouraged) to bring binoculars or a telescope. \n\nNo Registration\nOpen to Everyone\nArrive Anytime Between the Times Given\nStay for the Entire Event or As Long As You Want\nNo Park Permit Required\nNo Telescope Needed – You are welcome to bring your own equipment!\n\nA Quick Background On the Messier Catalog and Messier Marathons.\nBetween the years of 1760 and 1781\, French astronomer and “comet-hunter\,” Charles Messier (pronounced mess-ē-ā)\, produced a list of 103 “fuzzy objects” in the sky. His catalog was created so he and other comet-hunters could differentiate between permanent celestial objects and the transient phenomena for which they were searching. Messier observed the skies through a 4” telescope from the middle of Paris\, France\, so his list was somewhat limited to only brighter objects and to only certain parts of the celestial sphere. Between 1921 and 1966\, historians found evidence for seven additional objects that Messier (or his assistant) had collected but did not have a chance to append the master list. These objects have since been added to the official catalog bringing the total number to 110. \nThe Messier Catalog is composed of 56 Open and Globular Star Clusters\, 40 galaxies\, 11 Nebulae\, 1 Double Star\, 1 Asterism (a star pattern)\, and 1 “object” that is in fact a particularly dense patch of stars in the Milky Way. Although there are far larger and more complete catalogs available to astronomers\, the Messier Catalog can be thought of as “the best and brightest” deep space objects visible in the northern hemisphere. \nEach year\, between mid-March and early April\, there is a “window of opportunity” to view nearly all 110 Messier objects in a single evening starting strictly at sunset and ending at sunrise. On April 1st\, we are going to give it a try… and you are invited! You can attend for just a few hours or go all night if you would like. Whatever you decide\, it will be an amazing experience. \nConfirmed BOO Volunteers For the Evening:\nMichael Sibbernsen (ESSMO\, TV Interview)\, Carol Wells (BSO)\, David Dickinson (Host and eVscope observing)\, Holly (Host\, Parking)\, Matt Anderson (Host\, Parking\, TV Interview)\, Brett (BSO)\, Scott. \nAdditional BOO Volunteers are encouraged to join if available. \nVolunteers: please check back here (as well as your messages) for event confirmation\, cancelation\, or postponement announcements.
