Or grab a book from our wonderful astronomy library! No pressure\, no book assignments\, no book report…a stress-free opportunity to read under the evening sky. We will have coffee and water on hand\, but feel free to bring your own drinks and snacks. You are also encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket and pillow.\n\n\n\nAfter our silent reading time and optional discussion\, our staff will take you on a tour of the facility and once dark\, observe beautiful objects in the night sky through our various telescopes. Even if the skies are cloudy\, you can enjoy our exhibits and astronomy videos in the Multipurpose Center. Or maybe you want to know what is like to have incredible night vision like an owl! \nJoin us on August 8th\, 2025 from 6-10:30PM at Platte River State Park to explore how fascinating nature can be from dusk to nightfall. We will have a wide array of activities going on throughout the evening so there is sure to be something for everyone! \nMost activities will be located around the nature center/tennis courts/ball field area. \nBelow is a lineup for the evening: \nNature Center special hours- 6-8:30PM\nCrawdad Creek- 6-8:30PM\nLive Reptiles & Amphibians- 6-8:30PM \nGuided Dusk to Nightfall Hikes- 7:30-8:30PM (Hiking groups will leave at 7:30 and 8)\nFire Making & Smores- 7-9PM\nMoth Lighting (with UNL Extension)- 9-10:30PM\nBat Mist Netting (located at the stables)- 9-10:30PM\nAstronomy- 9-10:30PM – Michael Sibbernsen will be giving a presentation in the Mallet Lodge at 9PM. Observing afterwards until 10:30. All volunteers will set-up telescope at the Owen Landing boat ramp OR in the green space to the NW of the Spray Park Building (south of Mallet). DESCRIPTION:The 11th Annual Fall Star-B-Q\nSponsored by ALLO Fiber of Lincoln\n\nBranched Oak Observatory is pleased to announce our 11th Annual Fall Star-B-Q on Saturday\, Sept. 27th\, 2025. 5PM to 11PM.\n\n*No Registration Required*$5 Per Person Admission – Max $20 for Conjugal Family + Grandparents*Arrive Anytime Between 5 and 11PM*Stay for the Entire Event or As Long As You Want*No Park Permit Required*No Telescope Needed – (But are welcome to bring your own equipment!)\n\nThe Empire Strikes Back… Again!\n\nBy popular demand\, the 501st Legion- Central Garrison (a Star Wars anachronism group)\, will be BACK for this year’s StarBQ. You will see Stormtroopers and other nefarious Star Wars characters roaming the grounds. Luckily for us\, however\, there will also be costumed representatives from the Rebel Legion and maybe even the Mandalorian Mercs to keep those bad guys in-check! Bring your cameras (and lightsabers) for some amazing photo opportunities. Appearing 5:00 to 7:30pm.\n\nFor the kids and young-at-heart\, we will have Space-Crafts\, Science Demonstrations with the UNL Society of Physics Students \, a “touch a meteorite” display\, and a special NASA Exhibit* in the Kunkel Family Multipurpose Center. Outside in the field we will have a play area with Blackhole (our version of Cornhole)\, Bolo Ladder Golf\, and our Giant Moon Map. 5:00-8:00PM\nIn the Boller-Sivil Observatory you will find safe Solar Viewing from 5 to 7pm.\n\nOptional dinner will be available from TBA of Lincoln\, TBA and TBA between 5:00-8:00pm.\n\nDuring Dinner\, the Last Minute Band will be playing your favorite Classic Rock. Live music between 5:00-8:00pm\n\nRaffle Tickets will be for sale ($5 ea.) between 5:00 and 8:30pm. The Raffle winners will be announced at 8:30pm. Amazing prizes include a ZWO Seestar S50 Telescope\, and tabletop “dob” telescope\, astrophotography prints\, binoculars\, a deluxe oil change and more! [Watch this space for additions].\n\nOnce dark\, we will be viewing the night sky through our many telescopes\, and through the equipment of area amateur astronomers from Lincoln and Omaha clubs.
