SUMMARY:Perseus Meteor Shower / Late Night Star Party
DESCRIPTION:The Perseid Meteor Shower is going to be a great one this year thanks to a moonless night\, and you are invited out the Branched Oak Observatory for the best chances to see a shooting star or two.\nFor this event\, we will be shifting our regular Thursday night Summer Hours of 7-11pm BACK TO 9pm-1am. These late night hours will increase the odds for additional shooting stars. Visit anytime between 9PM and 1AM and stay as long as you would like.\nObserving will begin a little after 9PM\, with visitors having the opportunity to see galaxies\, nebulae\, and star-clusters through our different telescopes. As the evening progresses\, the radiant (apparent origin) of the shower will rise higher in the northeast increasing the probability of additional and brighter meteors.\n– The cost is just $5 per person.\n– The event will begin Thursday evening at 9pm\, and the sky-park will remain open until 1am Friday.\n– Feel free to come anytime between 9pm and 1am (the later the better for observing). Lay back\, relax\, and stay as long as you would like.\n– Bring your own lawn chairs\, Zero-g chairs\, blankets\, pillows\, etc. Bring your own cooler\, refreshments and snacks.\n– Although the meteors will be the “(shooting) star of the show”\, we will have our various telescopes trained on dozens of beautiful objects throughout the evening\, including outstanding views of the Planet Saturn (towards the end of the event).\n– This event is weather dependent. If the skies are not cooperating\, observations may be difficult or impossible. NO Park Permit required (We are near\, but not inside the Branched Oak SRA).\nHOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!\n\nBackground:\nThe Perseid Meteor Shower is caused when the Earth passes through the debris leftover by Comet Swift-Tuttle. These tiny remnants enter Earth’s atmosphere and produce a beautiful light show. The high point of the meteor shower is predicted between the 11th and the 14th of August and may yield as many as 90 meteors per hour. The “radiant” for the shower is in the constellation of Perseus found low in the northeast. Perseus is the Greek hero who flew in on the back of Pegasus and dispatched the Kraken sea monster using the head of Medusa and saving Andromeda the Princess.

We will have coffee and water on hand\, but feel free to bring your own drinks and snacks. You are also encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket and pillow. \nAfter our silent reading time and optional discussion\, our staff will take you on a tour of the facility and once dark\, observe beautiful objects in the night sky through our various telescopes. Even if the skies are cloudy\, you can enjoy our exhibits and astronomy videos in the Multipurpose Center. DESCRIPTION:SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT!!  Because of the weather forecast for this weekend\, we are going to shift the hours a bit for our special 4th of July Event.  We will now OPEN *EARLY*\, Saturday between 1-5pm\, for Solar Viewing\, field activities\, and indoor programming.  We will then open again Saturday night 7pm and remain open until when/if it starts raining.  IF it clears \, we will have an evening observing until 11pm. \nNo fireworks. An enjoyable and quieter alternative for you\, your family and your leashed pets. Enjoy the summer evening underneath the starry skies and see natures fireworks like galaxies and nebulae and *maybe* a shooting star or two. Bring your own food for a picnic (no grills). \nYard games\, space crafts\, chalk art\, safe solar viewing and top it off with a tour of the night sky. Holiday special\, no admission fee (a free-will donation is very appreciated). 4-legged friends are welcome! 1-5pm

DESCRIPTION:Open to the General Public – FREE ADMISSION \nJoin us for another session of our popular Silent Book Club! \nBring your book (or ebook or audiobook w/earbuds) and read quietly for an hour. Or grab a book from our wonderful astronomy library! No pressure\, no book assignments\, no book report…a stress-free opportunity to read under the evening sky. We will have coffee and water on hand\, but feel free to bring your own drinks and snacks. You are also encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket and pillow. \nAfter our silent reading time and optional discussion\, our staff will take you on a tour of the facility and once dark\, observe beautiful objects in the night sky through our various telescopes. Even if the skies are cloudy\, you can enjoy our exhibits and astronomy videos in the Multipurpose Center. Dress warm for the outside observing. \n7:30 – 8:00 pm – Gather\, chat\, grab a pastry\, pour yourself a cup of coffee or tea (we’re ok with BYOB too!)\n8:00 – 9:00 pm – Quiet reading of your choice\n9:00 – 9:30 pm – Discuss (or not) as the spirit moves you\n9:30 – 11:00 pm – Enjoy a tour of the observatory\, and weather permitting\, view night sky objects with our collection of telescopes \nThere is no cost for this event. Donations to the observatory are encouraged and appreciated. \nPlease note\, our Silent Book Club events can only offer limited observing opportunities.
