SUMMARY:CANCELED - 2025 Messier Marathon at Branched Oak Observatory - CANCELED
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: This event has been CANCELED \nWith the nature of a “Messier Marathon” being observationally-based\, combined with the various negative weather forecasts for Saturday night and Sunday morning\, we have decided to CANCEL the Messier Marathon event. Unfortunately\, with our packed calendar and the brief window for this type of event\, we will not be able to set a “rain-date.” Our next public event will be the FREE evening star party that accompanies the Orbital Odyssey Bike Race earlier in the day on April 5th. We hope to see you all there! \n  \n  \nEvent Category – General Public Event \nThe 4th Annual Messier Marathon at Branched Oak Observatory is Here! \n\nButton up warm and fill up your giant insulated mug with strong coffee; the Fourth Annual Messier Marathon is HERE!\n\nSure\, you may have seen the Orion Nebula (M42)\, the Andromeda Galaxy (M31)\, and even a handful of other beautiful “Messier Objects\,” but what about the ENTIRE catalog of 110 deep-space wonders? Collectively\, we are going to give it a try\, and do so ALL in ONE evening! Are we crazy? Well\, we are astronomers\, so you be the judge.\n\nIn all reality\, we *won’t* see all the Messier Objects\, but some astronomers present may give it a good ol’ college try. Others will just slowly scan the skies for their favorites to share with visitors. It is all in fun and a great opportunity for the general public to enjoy several observations.\n\nJoin us on Saturday\, March 29th – Sunday\, March 30th\, for just a few hours of fun observations or for the ENTIRE evening. You are guaranteed to see a bevy of galaxies\, nebulae\, and star clusters.\n\n\nCOST? FREE. Although Branched Oak Observatory is charging admission for many events in 2025\, the Messier Marathon is FREE of charge and open to anyone interested in the night sky. A suggested donation of $5 per person is appreciated. Although NOT necessary\, you are certainly welcome (and encouraged) to bring binoculars or a telescope (or just use ours). A comfortable chair\, blanket\, and pillow are suggested as well depending on how long you plan to stay.\n\n\n-No Registration.\n-Open to Everyone\n-Arrive Anytime Between 8:00 PM on Saturday and 7:00 AM on Sun.Stay for the Entire Event or As Long As You Want\n-No Park Permit Required\n-No Telescope Needed (You are\, however\, welcome to bring your own equipment)\n-Our Location: Branched Oak Observatory is located near\, but not inside\, the Branched Oak Lake and Recreation Area. See here for a Google Map location of Branched Oak Observatory- https://tinyurl.com/BOO-Location-Map\n\nWe hope to see you there!\n\n\nA Quick Background On the Messier Catalog and Messier Marathons.\nBetween the years of 1760 and 1781\, French astronomer and “comet-hunter\,” Charles Messier (pronounced mess-ē-ā)\, produced a list of 103 “fuzzy objects” in the sky. His catalog was created so he and other comet-hunters could differentiate between permanent celestial objects and the transient phenomena for which they were searching. Messier observed the skies through a 4” telescope from the middle of Paris\, France\, so his list was somewhat limited to only brighter objects and to only certain parts of the celestial sphere. Between 1921 and 1966\, historians found evidence for seven additional objects that Messier (or his assistant) had collected but did not have a chance to append the master list. These objects have since been added to the official catalog bringing the total number to 110. The Messier Catalog is composed of 56 Open and Globular Star Clusters\, 40 galaxies\, 11 Nebulae\, 1 Double Star\, 1 Asterism (a star pattern)\, and 1 “object” that is in fact a particularly dense patch of stars in the Milky Way. Although there are far larger and more complete catalogs available to astronomers\, the Messier Catalog can be thought of as “the best and brightest” deep space objects visible in the northern hemisphere.\nEach year\, between mid-March and early April\, there is a “window of opportunity” to view *nearly* all 110 Messier objects in a single evening starting at sunset and ending at sunrise the following day. This year\, the weekend of March 29th is going to be best.\nYou can attend for just a few hours or go all night if you would like. Whatever you decide\, it will be an amazing experience.\n\nConfirmed BOO Volunteers For the Evening: Matthew Anderson (Event Lead\, Host). Michael Sibbernsen (ESSMO)\, Carol Wells (Observing)\, David Dickinson (Observer)\, Paul Spieker (Observer)\, Bhanu Dangi. Holly Hladik (Host\, MPC). \nAdditional BOO Volunteers are encouraged to join if available. \nVolunteers: please check back here (as well as your messages) for event confirmation\, cancelation\, or postponement announcements.

On Friday OR Saturday\, October 18th or 19th\, from 7PM to 11PM\, Branched Oak Observatory will host The Comet A3 Star Party\, where we’ll turn our eyes to the night sky for a chance to witness the rare beauty of Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS). \nComets are notoriously elusive. Their diffuse brightness\, and many times low position in the sky\, make them difficult to observe\, often requiring a bit of luck and perfect conditions. This comet\, now slowly leaving the inner solar system\, will be faint and fleeting\, but it’s an opportunity not to be missed! We encourage you to arrive around 7PM to get situated\, but make Be sure you are here between 8 and 9PM for the best chance to see the comet. \nIn addition to the challenge of spotting Comet A3\, we’ll also explore some of the night sky’s more familiar wonders. Gaze at the spectacular Saturn with its brilliant rings\, marvel at the luminous glow of the Moon\, and dive deep into the universe with views of distant galaxies and nebulae. \nEmbrace the eerie vibe of October as we combine the mystery of the cosmos with the spooky season. Under the inky black sky\, you’ll be in for a hauntingly beautiful experience. \nNote: Night sky observing is dependent on local weather conditions. \n\nThis is a FREE event\, but donations are very much appreciated ($5 per visitor is suggested)\nNo Registration\nOpen to Everyone\nArrive Anytime Between the Times Given\nStay for the Entire Event or As Long As You Want\nNo Park Permit Required\n\nConfirmed BOO Volunteers \nMichael Sibbernsen \nAdditional BOO Volunteers are encouraged to join if available. \nVolunteers: please check back here (as well as your messages) for event confirmation\, cancelation\, or postponement announcements.

SUMMARY:CANCELED - Perseid Meteor Shower Late Night Star Party
DESCRIPTION:NOTICE: After looking at the weather forecast for tonight\, we have made the difficult decision to go ahead and CANCEL the Late Night Perseid Meteor Shower Star Party. Meteor Shower observations require the very best of sky conditions and tonight’s cloud cover and low transparency predictions simply do not provide that. Further\, we will be changing our Summer Hours from 11PM to 10PM tonight for INDOOR activities for those who would still care to stop out.\nPerseid Meteor Shower LATE NIGHT Star Party \n\nThe Perseid Meteor Shower is going to be a good one this year thanks to a moonless night (during our observing hours). Although the actual “high point” of the shower is early the following week\, our weekend star party should yield a good number of shooting stars.\n\n\n\nFor this event\, we will combine our regular Summer Hours activities starting before the Sun goes down\, with an extension into the early morning hours when the odds for shooting stars will be greatest. Visit anytime between 7PM and 2AM and stay as long as you want.\n\n\n\nBetween 7 and 9PM\, families can enjoy activities in the classroom\, and tours of our grounds. Observing will begin around 9PM\, with visitors having the opportunity to see galaxies\, nebulae\, and star-clusters through our different telescopes. As the evening progresses\, the radiant (the apparent origin) of the meteor shower will rise higher in the northeast increasing the probability of additional and brighter meteors.\n\n\n\n– The event will begin Saturday evening at 7pm\, and the sky-park will remain open until 2am Sunday morning.\n\n\n– Feel free to come anytime between 7pm and 2am (the later the better for meteor hunting). Lay back\, relax\, and stay as long as you would like.\n\n\n– Bring your own lawn chairs\, Zero-g chairs\, blankets\, pillows\, etc. Bring your own cooler\, refreshments and snacks.\n\n\n– Although the meteors will be the “(shooting) star of the show”\, we will have our various telescopes trained on dozens of beautiful objects throughout the evening.\n\n\n\nThis event is weather-dependent. If the skies are not cooperating\, observations may be difficult or impossible. PLEASE check our Facebook Page PRIOR to visiting for potential cancelations and general updates regarding the event.\n\n\n\nSee here for the location of Branched Oak Observatory.\nhttps://tinyurl.com/BOO-Location-Map\n\n\n\nHOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!\n\n\n\n\nThis event is FREE. Donations are appreciated ($5 per person is recommended).\nNo Registration is Required\nOpen to Everyone\nArrive Anytime Between the Times Given\nStay for the Entire Event or As Long As You Want\nNo Park Permit Required\nNo Telescope Needed-  (You are\, however\, welcome to bring your own equipment)\n\n\n\n\n\nBackground:\n\n\nThe Perseid Meteor Shower is caused when the Earth passes through the debris leftover by Comet Swift-Tuttle. These tiny remnants enter Earth’s atmosphere and produce a beautiful light show. The high point of the meteor shower is predicted between the 11th and the 14th of August and may yield as many as 90 meteors per hour. The “radiant” for the shower is in the constellation of Perseus found low in the northeast. Perseus is the Greek hero who flew in on the back of Pegasus and dispatched the Kraken sea monster using the head of Medusa and saving Andromeda the Princess.\n\n\nConfirmed BOO Volunteers and Summer Staff For the Evening:\nMichael Sibbernsen \nAdditional BOO Volunteers are encouraged to join if available. \nVolunteers: please check back here (as well as your messages) for event confirmation\, cancelation\, or postponement announcements.
