DESCRIPTION:It’s Gettin’ Chili Cook-Off and Star Party \nJoin us for an evening of hot competition and cool stargazing! Calling all chili enthusiasts and night-sky dreamers to our Chili Cook-Off and Stargazing event!\nIf you’ve got a chili recipe that can pack a punch\, bring your best Traditional (no beans) or Homestyle (with beans) chili and enter the competition. Not a chef? No problem! Come hungry\, savor a variety of chilies\, and cast your vote as a People’s Choice judge. White/blond/chicken chilies (and side dishes) are welcome to be served\, but only red chilies will face off in the official contest. And don’t hold back on those toppings – all the fixings are welcome! \nTrophies and the ultimate chili bragging rights await the top 3 winners!\nOnce you’ve voted on your favorite chili\, head outside and our observatory volunteers will take you on a cosmic journey\, showcasing the wonders of the night sky through our telescopes (weather permitting). This will be our final big event of the year\, and we’re closing it out with a big bang! Dress warm\, it’s chilly out there.\nCome for the chili\, stay for the stars – we can’t wait to share this unforgettable evening with you. \nFor our Non-Competitors / Tasting Judges:\n• Admission is $10 for Adults. $5 for Children (5 to 15).\n• Anyone can judge (and compete) including the general public and our observatory volunteers.\n• Tasting and judging will take place between 6:30 and 7:30pm.\n• Results will be announced between 7:45 and 8:00pm.\n• Iced Tea will be available. Feel free to bring your own drinks.\n• Observing opportunities will be between 7:00 and 10:00pm. Be sure to bundle up; It may be cold. \nFor Our Chili Competitors:\n• The Chili Cook and their Sous-chef  (one extra family member) receive FREE Admission. Additional family members must pay regular admission.\n• Primary cooking must be done at home\, although “last minute ingredients” can be added during your set-up. Table space with electrical outlets will be provided for your crock pot\, cast-iron pot with hot plate\, or other serving container.\n• Only red chilies (traditional Texas and home style) will be judged. White chilies are welcome to add variety but are not part of the competition.\n• Set-up will be between 5:30 and 6:30pm. Service begins at 6:30. DESCRIPTION:Open to the General Public – FREE ADMISSION \n\nJoin us for another session of our popular Silent Book Club!\n\nBring your book (or ebook or audiobook w/earbuds) and read quietly for an hour. Or grab a book from our wonderful astronomy library! No pressure\, no book assignments\, no book report…a stress-free opportunity to read under the evening sky. We will have coffee and water on hand\, but feel free to bring your own drinks and snacks. You are also encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket and pillow.\n\n\n\nAfter our silent reading time and optional discussion\, our staff will take you on a tour of the facility and once dark\, observe beautiful objects in the night sky through our various telescopes. Even if the skies are cloudy\, you can enjoy our exhibits and astronomy videos in the Multipurpose Center. Dress warm for the outside observing.\n\n\n\n\n7:30 – 8:00 pm – Gather\, chat\, grab a pastry\, pour yourself a cup of coffee or tea (we’re ok with BYOB too!)\n8:00 – 9:00 pm – Quiet reading of your choice\n9:00 – 9:30 pm – Discuss (or not) as the spirit moves you\n9:30 – 11:00 pm – Enjoy a tour of the observatory\, and weather permitting\, view night sky objects with our collection of telescopes\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere is no cost for this event.
